Abortion Doctor Shot

Dr. George Tiller, one of the nation's few providers of late-term abortions despite decades of protests and attacks, was shot and killed Sunday in a church where he was serving as an usher. The gunman fled, but a 51-year-old suspect was detained some 170 miles away in suburban Kansas City three hours after the shooting, Wichita Deputy Police Chief Tom Stolz said.

There was no immediate word of the motive Tiller's assailant. But the doctor's violent death was the latest in a string of shootings and bombings over two decades directed against abortion clinics, doctors and staff.

Long a focus of national anti-abortion groups, including a summer-long protest in 1991, Tiller was shot in the foyer of Reformation Lutheran Church, Stolz said. Tiller's attorney, Dan Monnat, said Tiller's wife, Jeanne, was in the choir at the time.
The slaying of the 67-year-old doctor is "an unspeakable tragedy," his widow, four children and 10 grandchildren said in statement. "This is particularly heart-wrenching because George was shot down in his house of worship, a place of peace."

Stolz said all indications were that the gunman acted alone, although authorities were investigating whether he had any connection to anti-abortion groups. Tiller's Women's Health Care Services clinic is one of just three in the nation where abortions are performed after the 21st week of pregnancy. The clinic was heavily fortified and Tiller often traveled with a bodyguard, but Stolz said there was no indication of security at the church Sunday.

Anti-abortion groups denounced the shooting and stressed that they support only nonviolent protest. The movement's leaders fear the killing could create a backlash just as they are scrutinizing U.S. Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor, whose views on abortion rights are not publicly known. Press Woman Hauled Off from Press Conference

A writer for a small Georgia newspaper who wanted to give President Barack Obama a letter was forcibly removed from a press area near Air Force One on Thursday shortly before he arrived at the airport. Airport security officers carried the African American woman away by the feet and arms as she protested her removal. She was then allowed to leave. She said the letter she had written was opposing gay marriage.

Newspaper writer Brenda Lee got tossed from an Air Force One press area after trying to get a letter against gay marriage delivered to President Barack Obama.

Obama said during the election that he was against gay marriage, but has remained silent on the issue since then, allowing the Democratic congress to permit the District of Columbia to accept gay marriages from other states. See Chick's SIN CITY.

California Supremes Secure Gay Marriage Ban

Dashing the hopes of gays throughout the state, the California Supreme court refused to overturn the majority popular vote to ban gay marriage there. However, by allowing the 18,000 or so illegal gay marriages that were made in the interim to stand, the court invites an appeal. See Chick's DOOM TOWN.

Ex-convict Muslims Plot Polgroms

The arrest of four Muslim ex-convicts in an alleged homegrown terror plot against Jews in the Bronx is renewing fears about the spread of Islamic extremism in the nation's prisons.

At least two of the four men suspected of plotting to bomb synagogues and shoot down military airplanes converted to Islam behind bars. The alleged mastermind is also a convert, and the fourth man identified himself as a Muslim when he entered prison.

But this week's foiled plot is not the first terror scheme implicating Muslim convicts, and it comes despite reports of progress in screening chaplains and materials on Islam in the prison system.

"Basically, the threat is real," said Paul Rogers, past president of the American Correctional Chaplains Association. "Prisons have unstable people and people who are on the edge of a lot of different things. The radical elements of any religion can be emphasized."

Those fears were heightened this week as lawmakers debated the fate of detainees if President Barack Obama shutters the prison at Guantanamo Bay.

FBI Director Robert Mueller said terror suspects brought to the U.S. could end up "radicalizing others" or plan attacks on the country. Defense Secretary Robert Gates said Obama would do nothing to endanger the public and decried "fear-mongering about this."

The four defendants in the New York terror case had been in and out of prison.

Laguerre Payen said he converted to Islam in prison, but a Muslim prayer leader who counseled him when he got out said he had a poor understanding of the faith. Onta Williams had registered as a Baptist in prison, but his uncle said he converted to Islam inside. David Williams and James Cromitie had registered as Muslim in prison, according to correction officials.

Payen appears to be a Haitian citizen, while the three others are Americans.

Mitch Silber, a top New York Police Department intelligence analyst, said inmates converting to Islam are so common that he and his colleagues call it "Prislam." Though many drop the faith once they are out, for some "the conversion sticks" and can fuel anger toward the United States, said Silber, co-author of the 2007 NYPD report "Radicalization in the West: The Homegrown Threat."

Just as young people can be radicalized by "cut-and-paste" readings of the Quran on the Internet, new inmates may get a distorted view of Islam from gang leaders or other influential inmates, according to "Out of the Shadows: Getting Ahead of Prison Radicalization," a 2006 report by the George Washington University Homeland Security Policy Institute and the University of Virginia Critical Incident Analysis Group.

Several imams used the term "Jailhouse Islam" to describe a form of Islam in prison that incorporates gang loyalty and violence, the report said.

Many states are doing a better job of screening the reading material that comes into prisons, Rogers said. But other problems arise when there are no qualified chaplains or volunteers.

"Sometimes inmates rely on other inmates, and it's sort of the prison way," Rogers said. "They turn to someone they trust, their 'celly' or someone in their cellblock, and put them on a pedestal as someone who has more knowledge about the religion. He could be spreading knowledge, or could be spreading ignorance."

Inmates who were radicalized in prison include:

- Jose Padilla, a former Chicago gang member, who converted to Islam behind bars and was recruited at a mosque to become a mujahedeen fighter, authorities said. Prosecutors accused him of plotting to detonate a radioactive "dirty bomb," but he was convicted of unrelated terror support charges.

- Richard Reid, a British citizen and follower of Osama bin Laden, who was a prison convert in England and became involved with militants after he was freed. He pleaded guilty in 2002 to trying to blow up a trans-Atlantic flight with explosives hidden in his shoes. He is now serving a life sentence at a maximum-security prison in Florence, Colo.

- A group of prisoners in California who converted to Islam and were arrested in 2005 on charges of plotting behind bars to attack military sites, synagogues and other targets.

Islam took hold in U.S. prisons in the 1940s, when members of the Nation of Islam were held for refusing to fight in World War II. Malcolm X was one of their most famous prison recruits.

The religion spread when Muslim inmates successfully sued for more freedom to practice their faith. Get-tough sentencing laws enacted in the 1980s filled prisons with large numbers of blacks and led to another spike in conversion. By this time, many blacks who once were in the Nation of Islam embraced mainstream Islam instead. See Chick's MEN OF PEACE.

Church of Scotland Swings Both Ways

The Church of Scotland has approved the appointment of a practicing homosexual minister - the latest case of tensions over sexuality to prompt division in the Anglican Communion.

The church's ruling body voted Saturday by 326 to 267 to support the appointment of the Rev. Scott Rennie, 37, who was previously married to a woman and is now in a sexual relationship with a man.

The case threatens to divide Scottish religious leaders and follows tensions within the worldwide 77 million-member Anglican Communion. About 900 elders and ministers took part in a debate on Rennie's case, but many chose to abstain from casting a vote.

Anglicans have conducted lengthy debate over sexuality issues since the Episcopal Church - the Anglican body in the U.S. - consecrated the first openly gay bishop, V. Gene Robinson of New Hampshire in 2003. Robinson has since admitted he was also an alcoholic when he was made Bishop.

Following the vote to back Rennie, Scotland's Equality and Human Rights Commission said the Church of Scotland had proven itself to be "a modern church for a modern Scotland."

Protesters had lobbied the Kirk - the Church of Scotland's ruling executive - over Rennie's case, saying his appointment was not consistent with the teachings of the Bible. See Chick's WHY NO REVIVAL?

Senates Votes to Keep Terrorists Out of USA, But Obama Insists

In a rare, bipartisan defeat for President Barack Obama, the Senate voted overwhelmingly Wednesday to keep the prison at Guantanamo Bay open for the foreseeable future and forbid the transfer of any terrorists to the USA or prisons in the USA.
Democrats lined up with Republicans in the 90-6 vote that came on the heels of a similar move a week ago in the House, underscoring widespread apprehension among Obama's congressional allies over voters' strong feelings about bringing detainees to the U.S. from the prison in Cuba. However Obama continues to insist he's transferring some of the terrorists here despite pleas to the contrary. Let's hope there's not another attack, or his "turn the other cheek" policies are going to seem suicidal. See Chick's WHO CARES?

Romanian Teen to Pay Taxes for Selling Sex to Italian

A teenager who sold her virginity for $13,937 may have to pay half of it in taxes, London's Daily Mail reported.
An Italian businessman reportedly paid Romanian-born Alina Percea, 18, in cash for a weekend of sex after the teen auctioned off her virginity online.

Alina Percea, 18, reportedly sold her virginity to an Italian businessman. Percea, who is studying in Germany, flew to Italy for the romp. But that's not stopping tax officials in Berlin from pursuing part of her earnings. They said the deal was "nothing more than prostitution." Prostitution is legal in Germany but hookers are heavily taxed. See Chick's THE OUTCAST.

Woman Has Twins from Two Different Dads

Mia Washington, of Dallas, gave birth 11 months ago to her sons Justin and Jordan. The boys, who were conceived naturally, were born just seven minutes apart -- but medical tests show they're half-brothers, not full brothers.

Washington, it turns out, cheated with a man other than her partner and ended up conceiving a child with both men. DNA tests from Clear Diagnostics, a local lab, showed there is no chance the boys have the same father, according to Fox 4 in Mia Washington, of Dallas, gave birth to twin sons 11 months ago. When she noticed her boys were developing different facial features, she had their DNA tested -- and learned that they had been fathered by different men.

Dr. Chris Dreiling explains how such a pregnancy could happen: If a woman releases more than one egg during ovulation and has sex with more than one man during that time, her eggs can be fertilized by different men, he said. He added that such cases are extremely rare.

Washington had the boys' DNA tested after noticing their facial features were different. Her fiance, James Harrison, who fathered one of the twins, has decided to forgive her and raise both children as his own. The identity of the other father hasn't been disclosed.

Washington, an African American, takes responsibility for what she did. "I'm trying to let everybody else know: Don't put yourself in my shoes, because it can hurt and it does hurt, but you still have to go on with life," she said. See Chick's CAUGHT!

Pelosi Blames CIA for Lying

WASHINGTON (May 14) -House Speaker Nancy Pelosi accused the CIA and Bush administration of misleading her about waterboarding detainees in the war on terror and sharply rebutted claims she was complicit in the method's use.

"We were told specifically that waterboarding was not being used," she told reporters, referring to a formal CIA briefing she received in the fall of 2002. He stammered and blinked repeatedly during the questions, giving long confused answers to simple yes or no questions. She also said the CIA repeatedly lied and misled her, but the CIA refutes those claims and no other congress persons who were present have used that defense. The issue calls into question Ms. Pelosi's honesty as she publicly condemned the administration for using what she calls "torture" (water dunking for 40 seconds) when it became public knowledge, but privately, knew about it for years and didn't complain. She had called for a "truth commission" to investigate the Bush Administration about the techniques, but now critics are saying she's the one who should be investigated.

Pope Shooter Wants to Convert

The gunman who shot Pope John Paul II says he would like to convert to Christianity at a baptism ceremony at the Vatican after his release from prison in January.

In comments relayed by his lawyer on Wednesday, Mehmet Ali Agca also says he wants to visit the grave of Pope John Paul II, meet with Pope Benedict XVI and produce a television documentary on the Vatican.

Mehmet Ali Agca, the Turkish gunman who shot Pope John Paul II in 1981, wants to convert to Christianity, according to his lawyer. Agca, seen in 2000, served 19 years in an Italian prison for the attack on the pontiff. He's currently in prison in Turkey for killing a journalist, a slaying that came before the attack on the pope. He is due to be released at the start of next year.

Agca shot and seriously wounded John Paul on May 13, 1981. The late pope met with Agca in an Italian prison in 1983 and forgave him for the shooting. Agca served 19 years in an Italian prison for the attack and is currently serving a prison term in Turkey for killing journalist Abdi Ipekci. (Chick would point out, the gunman want's to convert to Catholicism, not Christianity, haw-haw!)

Christian college okays degree for gay porn actor

A student suspended from Grove City College for his off-campus work in gay porn has withdrawn from the Christian school but can still earn a diploma.

John Gechter, 22, told Allied News of Grove City, that he and the college worked out a deal to allow him to take his final two classes elsewhere, transfer those credits to Grove City College and earn a degree from the college. “I’m satisfied with the outcome but not happy,” Gechter said.

“(Gechter’s) suspension resulted from his involvement in the adult pornography industry,” the statement read. “The student acknowledged that he was employed in the adult entertainment industry and that he knew that violated the student code of conduct. Throughout this process, his sexual orientation was not a factor in the decision.”

Gechter, who worked in porn under the alias Vincent DeSalvo, was suspended April 27 after college officials learned of his off-campus job. Gechter said he had been working in porn for the last two years, paying his way through college with his earnings.

The college, which has a strict code of student conduct that prohibits premarital sex, said that Gechter’s work in porn violated its standards. Gechter appealed the suspension and said previously he was considering a lawsuit.

Milwaukee Archbishop admits homosexuality

Catholic Archbishop Rembert Weakland, who retired from his post in Milwaukee, Wis., in 2002 over a sex and financial scandal involving a man, says in a new memoir that he's gay. Weakland had planned initially to have his memoirs published posthumously, but reconsidered and decided that now is the right time for the great coming out. By some estimates, nearly 50% of the Roman Catholic priesthood could be gay. Not surprising that most heterosexual men would not be attracted to a profession that mandates celibacy, but why would gay men be so attracted to the priesthood? The Vatican still affirms celibacy for priests and condemns homosexuality. See Chick's "Alberto" part one.

Gay Judge Taunts Christians

Francine Coppola, the mother of embattled Miss California Carrie Prejean, tells reporters her daughter should not be persecuted for "speaking her opinion."

"My daughter is a bright, beautiful, strong woman," she said. "She entered a pageant to WIN. She was ready physically, mentally, and spiritually to answer any FAIR question that was given to her on that stage that evening. She was asked a question and she answered it HONESTLY and from her heart. She was raised in a CHRISTIAN home. Marriage is between a man and a woman. Now she's being persecuted for speaking her opinion. This is a country that allows freedom of speech. She has every right to exercise it ... and she did."

She continues, "As a mother ... I'm proud of her, that I raised a daughter that has morals, values, and integrity to speak the TRUTH. She had the courage that evening to face an evil man in front of millions of viewers ... and not be afraid to speak what was in her heart! I know God is going to protect her from this evil man and all the others that are trying to attack her for voicing her opinion."

In response, the gay judge, Perez Hilton said, "Obviously Francine Prejean has been talking with the devil more than she has with God. I don't think I'm evil. She does. We can respectfully disagree. However, God does not think I'm evil. God loves me. And I love God. I spoke to God before the Miss USA pageant and she told me to ask that question. She also told me that Carrie Prejean did not deserve to win. Really! That's what God said to me. Ask her!!"

Ms. California Keeps Crown

Miss USA pageant co-owner Donald Trump announced that despite the controversy over her stand on gay marriage and racy pre-pageant photos that have surfaced, Carrie Prejean will retain the title of Miss California USA. Trump also commended Prejean for speaking her mind about same-sex marriage during the Miss USA Pageant.

“We’ve reviewed the pictures carefully. We are in the 21st century and I talked about relevance,” Trump told a packed press conference in Trump Tower Tuesday morning. “Carrie’s a model … We’ve made a determination that the pictures taken were acceptable, they’re fine, in many cases they’re very lovely pictures and in some cases they’re modeling pictures.”

Following his announcement, the controversial Miss USA runner-up thanked him as well as her supporters and, in an impassioned and sometimes tearful speech, blamed opponents of her social stands for circulating the photos and attacking her. Gay activists, on the other hand, are outraged, having failed at their efforts to leak photographs and punish the woman who spoke out against their agenda. Perez Hilton, the gossip blogger and Miss USA judge who started the controversy by asking Prejean for her views on gay marriage, expressed immediate anger on his Web site over Trump's decision.

“The Donald says that all the topless photos that have leaked are no big deal. He did not touch upon the many ways that Carrie Prejean has broken her contract with the Miss USA pageant …WTF????” Hilton posted.

Alan Keyes Released from Jail

Alan Keyes, who lost to Barack Obama in a U.S. Senate race, was arrested Friday protesting President Obama's invitation to speak at Notre Dame in Indiana. Today he was released from jail.

Keyes and 20 others were charged with trespassing, Dennis Brown, a spokesman for the Catholic university, said. Brown said the university has a long-standing policy that only student-led demonstrations are allowed on campus with approval from the office of student affairs.

Notre Dame invited Obama to deliver the commencement address and receive an honorary degree May 17, causing an uproar because of his strong support of abortion and partial birth abortion rights. Many of the protesters Friday pushed baby strollers covered in fake blood. Operation Rescue described the demonstration as peaceful.

Liberal Bishop Admits Gay Cover-up

NEW YORK (May 12) -- A Roman Catholic archbishop and liberal activist who resigned in 2002 over a gay sex and financial scandal is now promoting his book about being secretly gay in the church.

Archbishop Rembert Weakland, former head of the Milwaukee archdiocese, said in an interview Monday that he wrote about his sexual orientation because he wanted to be candid about "how this came to life in my own self, how I suppressed it, how it resurrected again."

The book is called "A Pilgrim in a Pilgrim Church: Memoirs of a Catholic Archbishop."

Weakland stepped down soon after Paul Marcoux, a former Marquette University theology student, revealed in May 2002 that he was paid $450,000 to settle a sexual assault claim he made against the archbishop more than two decades earlier. The money came from the archdiocese.

Marcoux went public at the height of anger over the clergy sex abuse crisis, when Catholics and others were demanding that dioceses reveal the extent of molestation by clergy and how much had been secretly spent to settle and hide claims.

Weakland now denies having sex with the young man. He apologized for concealing the hush money. The Vatican says that men with "deep-seated" attraction to other men should not be ordained.

Despite denying the homosexual molestation of the teen, an August 1980 letter obtained by the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel suggests he was guilty. In it, Weakland said he was in emotional turmoil over Marcoux and that he had "come back to the importance of celibacy in my life." He signed the letter, "I love you."

The revelations rocked the Milwaukee archdiocese, which Weakland had led since 1977. He was a hero for liberal Catholics nationwide because of his work on social justice and other issues.

Weakland also writes about his failures to stop sexually abusive priests. In a videotaped deposition released last November, Weakland admitted returning guilty priests to active ministry without alerting parishioners or police, thereby allowing them to abuse more victims.

Advocates for abuse victims said that Weakland's cover-up of his own sexual activity was part of a pattern of secrecy that included concealing the criminal behavior of child molesters. Weakland, a Benedictine monk, served in Rome as leader of the International Benedictine Confederation and also worked on a liturgy commission for the Second Vatican Council, which made reforms in the 1960s meant to make the church more liberal.

U.S. Catholics have long debated whether the priesthood had become a predominantly gay vocation. Estimates vary from 25 percent to 50 percent, according to a review of research on the issue by the Rev. Donald Cozzens, author of "The Changing Face of the Priesthood." See Chick's MEN IN BLACK.

Pope Visits Muslim Lands

(From late last week) On the second day of his visit to the Middle East, Pope Benedict XVI stressed the need for harmony and unity between Christians and Muslims.

Pope Benedict XVI visits the King Hussein Bin Talal mosque Saturday in Amman, Jordan.

"Muslims and Christians, precisely because of the burden of our common history, so often marked by misunderstanding, must today strive to be known and recognized as worshippers of God, faithful to prayer, eager to uphold and lift by the Almighty decrees," the pontiff said in an address at the King Hussein Bin Talal mosque in the Jordanian capital, Amman.

Often, "it is the ideological manipulation of religion, sometimes for political ends, that is a real catalyst for tension and division" between faiths, the pope said.

Pope Benedict also spoke about Iraq's Christians, asking the international community to "do everything possible to ensure that the ancient Christian community of that noble land has a fundamental right to peaceful coexistence with their fellow citizens." Watch how Jordanians feel about the pope's visit »

Vatican spokesman Federico Lombardi said the pope did not pray inside the mosque. (At least he didn't bow down before the Arab King, haw-haw!) See Chick's THE DECEIVED.

Vatican Guards Consider Women

The Vatican's Swiss Guards will swear in 32 new recruits Wednesday amid suggestions from their new commander that women might one day join their ranks. Col. Daniel Anrig said Tuesday he was open to the idea of women serving in the elite, 500-year-old papal security force, reversing the long-held position of his predecessors.

"Personally, I could imagine it for one job or another, surely," Anrig told private Mediaset television. "One could think about it."
He acknowledged there might be logistical problems, since the Vatican barracks housing the Swiss Guards are already crowded. "Sure, there could be problems, but every problem can be resolved," he said. The housing crunch has long been cited by previous commanders as the reason why women couldn't join. Anrig, a former Swiss police commander with a degree in civilian and church law, was tapped by Pope Benedict XVI to head the Swiss Guards last August.

The 110-strong force provides ceremonial guard duty, assists at Vatican functions as well as helps to protect the pope. The guards are ubiquitous around the Vatican, in their trademark blue-and-gold uniforms, halberds and crimson-plumed helmets.
Currently, each recruit must be a Catholic male, between the ages of 19 and 30, have completed mandatory Swiss military service, have an impeccable reputation and agree to sign up for at least two years. See Chick's THE POOR POPE?

Maine To Marry Gays

Same-sex marriage became legal in Maine on Wednesday as Gov. John Baldacci signed a bill less than an hour after Democrats in the state legislature approved it... despite polls that show a strong majority of the public is against it.

Governor John Baldacci (also a Democrat) signed the bill Wednesday legalizing homosexual marriage.

But he raised the possibility that the residents of the state could overturn the law, saying, "Just as the Maine Constitution demands that all people are treated equally under the law, it also guarantees that the ultimate political power in the State belongs to the people."

Three other states -- Massachusetts, Connecticut and Iowa -- allow same-sex marriages. Vermont has passed a law making gay and lesbian marriages legal that takes effect in September. New Hampshire lawmakers are close to passing a similar bill.

On Tuesday, the Washington City Council voted to recognize same-sex marriages from states that allow those unions. Mayor Adrian Fenty has indicated that he will sign the measure. It will become law if the Democratic controlled Congress fails to overturn the measure during a 30-day review period (which they won't). Ironically, President Obama claimed he was against gay marriage during the campaign, but recent events suggest passing same sex unions is one of the Democrat's top priorities. See Chick's DOOM TOWN.
