Biden "Comes Out" in support of gay marriage
Joe Biden said Sunday that he is "comfortable" with same-sex marriage, but the White House was quick to tamp down on his comments, insisting that the Obama administration is "still evolving" on marriage equality.
Biden's remarks indicate a personal conviction that may be out of step with the Obama campaign's official position... or at least, not officially "out of the closet" yet.
"I am vice president of the United States of America," he said. "The president sets the policy. I am absolutely comfortable with the fact that men marrying men, women marrying women, and heterosexual men and women marrying another are entitled to the same exact rights, all the civil rights, all the civil liberties. And quite frankly, I don't see much of a distinction -- beyond that."
Gay rights activists were frustrated at Team Obama's reaction to Biden's comments, and called on Obama to join the vice president in his support for gay marriage. But Obama worries about losing support from mainstream Americans and independents, which support traditional marriage over newer alternatives.
The pro-gay declaration is at odds with Biden's self proclaimed Catholic faith, as is his support of abortion. Obama is a self proclaimed Christian, but is an avid supporter of abortion and late term abortion rights. His claim to be against gay marriage was undercut by his press secretary's admission that in their private briefings, Obama supports gay marriage but is waiting until after the election to come out publicly about it.
Vice President Biden also credited the "Will & Grace" gay comedy program for making the gay lifestyle more acceptable in America. It mirrors claims Chick has made about Hollywood for years, that their left leaning activist oriented programs were encouraging acceptance to (and experimentation with) immoral behavior.
