President Barack Obama awarded the nation’s highest civilian honor, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, to two prominent homosexuals today, at a White House ceremony.
Harvey Milk, one of the country’s most active gay officials, and Billy Jean King, a lesbian who’s won dozens of tennis championships, are among the 16 award recipients. Milk was made famous in a recent Hollywood movie. The real Harvey Milk was much more controversial, however, having been a big supporter of The People's Temple and mass suicide leader, Rev. Jim Jones. Milk was killed himself by a fellow commissioner who he conspired with the mayor to refuse his promised seat back. The mayor was also killed and the assassin, Dan White, was sent to jail, but later committed suicide. See Chick's SIN CITY.
