Attack On VP's Daughter Widens

After naming Alaska Governor Sarah Palin as the GOP Vice Presidential Candidate, opponents have attacked the fact that her 17-year-old daughter is five months pregnant and hasn't yet married the father (but intends to do so). Obama, however, said he would not endorse the attacks on the teen. (Obama himself was conceived to an 18-year-old unmarried mother.) Although his official campaign does not continue the attacks, Obama supporters in the media and blogsphere do. They say the incident also proves that Palin's position on sex education and abstinence doesn't work. However, it is very possible the daughter DID use birth control and that it failed, and that abstinence is the only policy that actually does work-- No one really knows, so the argument has no merit at this point. The controversy shows how the abortion debate still dominates this election, since the inference is that the daughter should have terminated the baby, just as pro-abortion activists feel Gov.
